A private guide in Lisbon costs €70 each for two on foot and as little as €22 each for a larger family. This guide compares 11 private tours on price per group size, format, and whether the guide actually goes inside the monuments with you.
What You Should Know
- Eleven private tours of Lisbon, from three-hour walks through Alfama and Baixa to eight-hour days by van with hotel pickup. Only your own party joins, whether that is one person or fourteen.
- Private prices are quoted per person but fall as your group grows. The top-rated walking tour is €70 each for two, €40 each for six and €35 each for eight, half the per-head price a couple pays.
- "Private guide" does not always mean a guide inside the monuments. Some tours include guided interior visits; others state plainly that the guide or driver waits outside, and entry fees are extra on most.
- Walking tours stay in the old centre (Baixa, Alfama, Chiado and Bairro Alto). Belém sits about 6 km west along the river, so to include Jerónimos and the Belém Tower you need a vehicle tour or a separate Belém tour.
Private Tour Guides in Lisbon
Hiring a private tour guide in Lisbon gets much cheaper per person once there are three or more of you, because private tours are priced on a sliding scale. The top-ranked private walking tour here is €145 for a solo traveller, €70 each for a couple and €35 each for a group of eight, and the only people on it are yours.
This guide compares 11 bookable private tours in Lisbon across four formats: guided walks through the old centre, half-day and full-day tours by van with a driver-guide, and specialist tours on Lisbon's Jewish and African history and on Belém. Every price, rating and start time comes from the live listing and was checked on 30 September 2026. If you are weighing a private guide against a shared walk, our Lisbon walking tour guide covers the group and free tours. Private tuk-tuk tours are compared separately in our Lisbon tuk tuk tour guide, and if your private guide is for a day out of the city, see our day trips from Lisbon guide. If the hills are the concern, our guide to Lisbon for seniors covers the easier ways around, and our Lisbon city tour bus comparison covers the hop-on hop-off buses as a cheaper alternative. ℹ️ All 11 tour listings were reviewed by our team on September 30, 2026. Prices are per person in euros for the whole private party, and they fall as the group grows: we show the price each for two and for a larger group, as listed by the operator. One operator's price rises with group size even though it is labelled per person, so we show it exactly as listed. Prices and availability change, so always confirm the total at checkout before booking.
What to Expect on a Private Tour in Lisbon
A typical three-hour private walking tour of Lisbon's old centre.
- 0109:00
Meet under the Rua Augusta arch
Walking tours meet at a landmark in the centre: the Rua Augusta arch on Praça do Comércio, the Dom Pedro IV statue in Rossio, or Restauradores. Van and car tours collect you from your hotel instead.
- 02~09:15
Praça do Comércio and Baixa
The riverside square on the site of the royal palace destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, and the grid of streets rebuilt afterwards. Flat, and a good place for the guide to set out the city's history.
- 03~09:45
Casa dos Bicos and the Sé
The spiked facade of the Casa dos Bicos, dating from 1523, then Lisbon's 12th-century cathedral. Most walking tours visit the Sé from outside; entry is extra.
- 04~10:15
Alfama
Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, a maze of alleys and stairs that survived the earthquake. This is the steepest part of the walk and the part a private guide makes easiest, since you can stop whenever you like.
- 05~11:00
A viewpoint over the river
Usually Portas do Sol or Santa Luzia, looking over Alfama's rooftops to the Tagus, with the Pantheon and São Vicente de Fora pointed out nearby.
- 06~12:00
Finish in the old town
Walking tours end in the old town rather than back at the start, so confirm the end point if you have plans afterwards. Van and car tours drop you back at your hotel.

Most private tours in Lisbon follow a similar shape to the three-hour Hi Lisbon walk below: a central meeting point, a slow climb from the flat grid of Baixa into Alfama, and a finish at a viewpoint over the river. Because only your party is on it, the pace, the stops and the questions are yours to set.
Our take (the rating behind the rating): Almost every tour here sits between 4.8 and 5.0, so the share of one and two-star ratings says more. It is under 1 percent for Hi Lisbon, Inside Lisbon and both Essência da Latitude tours, and zero for Kitzel Tours, but 2.9 percent for Withlocals, 3.6 percent for Gold Compass and 6.7 percent for Cooltour.
Our take (the hills): The most practical thing guests say they got from a private guide is not history but navigation: the public lifts, back stairs and flat routes that avoid Lisbon's steepest climbs. It comes up across four operators, and guests who booked early in their trip used those shortcuts for the rest of the week.
Our take (review volume is not the same as recent reviews): The Withlocals walk has the most reviews of any private walking tour here at 1,148, yet only five were posted in the past twelve months. Hi Lisbon, Inside Lisbon, Essência da Latitude and Kitzel Tours are all reviewed every week. Recent reviews are the better signal of how a tour runs today.

Best Private Tour Guides in Lisbon, by Need
These tours are not all selling the same thing, so the right one depends on your group size, how much walking suits you and whether you want a guide inside the monuments. Six stand out for a specific reason.
Best of Lisbon Private Walking Tour
Three hours from under the Rua Augusta arch through Praça do Comércio, the Casa dos Bicos, the Sé and Alfama to a viewpoint over the river, with the Pantheon and São Vicente pointed out on the way. It runs at nine start times a day between 09:00 and 16:30, and only three of its 425 ratings are one or two stars. The price is €145 solo, €70 each for two and €35 each for eight or nine. It is a guide on foot and nothing more: no transport, no entry and no Belém. The route is set in advance, so it suits a first visit better than a tailored one.
Check availabilityPrivate Tour: Best of Lisbon Walking Tour
Rossio, the São Domingos church, Restauradores, Carmo, Chiado and Baixa, with a pastel de nata, tapas and a glass of wine included. The sliding price is the steepest on the page: €160 solo, €80 each for two, €52 each for three or four and €22 each for seven to fourteen. For seven or more people it is the lowest per-head price on this page. It does not run on Sundays, and the route covers Chiado and Baixa rather than Alfama.
Check availabilityLisbon Highlights Private Tour with Van and Local Guide
A driver-guide collects you from a central hotel, the cruise terminal or the airport, with room for four medium suitcases, so it can double as an arrival-day tour. The route takes in a viewpoint, a brief visit inside São Vicente de Fora, 45 minutes in Alfama, the Sé, Chiado and Bairro Alto, and the São Roque church, with a pastel de Belém tasting. Rated 5.0 from 782 reviews, with five at one or two stars. Check the day: São Roque is closed on Mondays and Sunday mornings.
Check availabilityTour of Lisbon with a Private Guide
Eight hours with hotel pickup at 08:30, and the listing states that the guide accompanies you into every monument, which several private tours here specifically exclude. For a full day that is good value: €105 each for two, €85 each for four or five, and €60 for children aged 4 to 12. It holds 5.0 from 205 reviews with none below three stars. Lunch is extra, and the vehicle takes a maximum of five. Of the two full-day tours with a guide inside the monuments, it is the lower-priced for two.
Check availabilityLisbon Private Half-Day and Customizable Tour
A private vehicle and driver with hotel pickup from 07:30, covering Parque Eduardo VII, Alfama, the castle, the Belém Tower and Jerónimos. At €42.15 each for a group of seven it is the cheapest way here to have transport and pickup included. Read what it leaves out, though: all entry fees, and a guide inside the monuments. It also has the highest share of low ratings among the vehicle tours (3.6 percent), mostly from guests who say they got a private driver rather than a guide. Book it for transport, not for the history.
Check availabilityLisbon Jewish Heritage and History Private Tour
Alfama and the remains of the city's medieval Jewish quarter, the Money Museum's medieval wall, the Jewish families of Chiado, the Inquisition at Rossio and Jewish archaeological finds at the Carmo Museum. Entry to both museums is included and the tour picks up from your hotel. Rated 5.0 from 332 reviews with none below three stars. It does not visit a synagogue, and the museum closures matter: Carmo is closed on Sundays and the Money Museum on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Check availabilityAlso in the table: the Withlocals highlights walk, which has the most reviews of any private walking tour here at 1,148 but only five in the past year; the Your Friend in Lisbon walk, rated 5.0 from 74 reviews, whose listed price rises with group size, so confirm the total before paying; the Selection Tours full day by Mercedes minivan with guided interior visits; the Alfacinha LX African history walk at a flat €95 per adult; and the Cooltour Belém tour with Jerónimos entry included, where some reviewers describe a larger headset group, so confirm the group arrangement before booking.
Private Walking Tour or Private Car Tour?
Looking at how these tours are structured, a Lisbon private tour guide on foot and one with a van are different products, and the choice comes down to three things: Lisbon's hills, Belém and time.
The hills
Lisbon is built on steep hills, and every walking route here climbs from Baixa into Alfama on cobbled streets and stairs. That is the point of a walking tour, since Alfama's alleys are too narrow for vehicles, but it is a real consideration for anyone with limited mobility or young children. The van and car tours drive you between the hilltop viewpoints and walk only the flat or short sections.
Belém
None of the private walking tours in the old centre reach Belém, which sits about 6 km west along the Tagus. To see Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower with a private guide, you need either a vehicle tour that includes it (Gold Compass and Selection Tours both list Belém) or the dedicated Cooltour Belém walk, which starts at the monastery entrance and includes the ticket. Jerónimos is closed on Mondays, so plan any Belém tour for another day.
Time
Three hours on foot covers the old centre well. Four hours by van adds more viewpoints and a short visit inside a church or two. The full-day tours are the only ones here that fit both the old town and Belém in one outing with a guide inside the monuments.
What about a private tuk-tuk?
Private tuk-tuk tours are another major private format in Lisbon, and they avoid most of the climbing. Operators state that children under seven are not allowed on their tuk-tuk tours, which rules them out for families with young children. They are compared in detail in our Lisbon tuk tuk tour guide.
What a Private Guide Includes, and What It Doesn't
"Private" on these listings means one thing reliably: no other travellers. Almost everything else varies, and three differences decide whether a tour is good value for you.
Price per person, not per group
Every tour here except one quotes a per-person price that falls with group size. A couple pays €70 each on the Hi Lisbon walk, and a group of eight pays €35 each: €140 against €280 for the whole party. Alfacinha LX charges a flat €95 per adult however many of you there are, so it only makes sense for small groups. And one listing, Your Friend in Lisbon, shows a figure that rises from €220 for two to €310 for eight while labelled per person. It is shown on this page exactly as listed; check the total at checkout.
Whether the guide goes inside
This is the difference the listings make least obvious. Kitzel Tours and Selection Tours include a guided visit inside the monuments. Cooltour includes Jerónimos entry and a guided visit. Gold Compass states that a guide inside the monuments is excluded, and Withlocals visits its sights from the outside. If the interiors of the Sé, São Roque or Jerónimos matter to you, check this column before the price.
How flexible the route is
Guests' expectations differ most here. Several private tours send a set route with timings the day before and stick to it; others treat the listing as a starting point. Reviews of Your Friend in Lisbon, Withlocals, Selection Tours and Essência da Latitude repeatedly mention guides reshaping the day around a family's interests or mobility. If you have already seen the main sights, or want particular places, say so when you book.
Entry fees
Most tours here exclude admission. The exceptions are the Jewish heritage tour, which includes two museums, and the Cooltour Belém tour, which includes Jerónimos. Budget entry on top of everything else.
Specialist Private Tours: Jewish Lisbon, African Lisbon and Belém
A private guide is at its most useful on a subject a group tour skims, and three of the tours here are built around one.
Jewish heritage. Essência da Latitude's four-hour tour follows the history of Lisbon's Sephardic community through Alfama, the Money Museum and its medieval wall, Chiado, Rossio (where the tour covers the history of the Portuguese Inquisition) and the Carmo Archaeological Museum. It includes both museum entries and hotel pickup. It does not visit a synagogue, which is the one thing that disappoints guests who assumed it would. Carmo is closed on Sundays and the Money Museum on Mondays and Tuesdays, which leaves Wednesday to Saturday for the full route.
African history. Alfacinha LX's two to three-hour walk covers the history of Africans and enslaved people in Lisbon: their role in the city's trade and daily life, a historic fountain where enslaved Africans had their own tap, and the immigrant neighbourhoods of today. At €95 per adult regardless of group size, with tea and coffee, it is the lowest-priced specialist tour here for one or two people. It has 36 reviews, 19 of them in the past year. It usually meets outside Rossio station, the guide carries a book of historical images to show how places looked, and guests note it involves a good deal of walking.
Belém. Cooltour's private tour starts at the entrance to Jerónimos Monastery, includes the ticket and a guided visit inside, then walks to the Monument to the Discoveries and the Belém Tower, both seen from outside. It runs in English, Portuguese, French or Spanish and does not operate on Mondays. At 4.7 from 60 reviews, with four of them at one or two stars, it rates below the other tours here, Several reviewers describe a larger group following the guide with headsets, despite the listing being presented as private, and one found Belém Tower closed for works. Guests consistently praise the monastery visit and the skip-the-line entry. Confirm the expected group arrangement before booking.
How Much Does a Private Tour Guide in Lisbon Cost?
A private tour guide in Lisbon costs €70 to €170 per person for two people on most tours, falling to €22 to €145 per person for a larger group. A three-hour private walk runs €140 to €176 in total for a couple; a four-hour tour by van runs €245 to €310 for two; and a full day with a guide inside the monuments runs €210 to €332 for two. Entry fees are extra on most tours.
Three hours on foot through the old centre with a guide and nothing else, or with food and drink on the Inside Lisbon walk. Falls to €22 to €35 each for groups of seven or more, the lowest per-head prices on this page for larger families.
Four hours with hotel pickup and a driver-guide, including the specialist Jewish heritage tour. Falls to €42 to €90 each for seven. Check whether the guide goes inside the monuments, because one of these tours excludes it.
Eight hours with pickup and a guide who comes into the monuments with you. Kitzel Tours is the better value for two at €105 each; Selection Tours takes up to eight at €145 each.
The sweet spot for most visitors is a three-hour private walk at €70 each for two, which falls sharply as your group grows. Price your actual group size before comparing tours, because the per-person figure on the listing assumes two people and can halve with six or more.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing in these reviews is that 'private' tells you who is on the tour, not what kind of tour it is: the sharpest disappointments come from guests who booked a private driver expecting a guide, or a private listing where reviewers describe a larger headset group, so read the inclusions before the price.
Tips for Hiring a Private Guide in Lisbon
- Enter your real group size before comparing prices. Private prices fall steeply per person, so a tour that looks expensive for two can be the cheapest option for six.
- Check whether the guide goes inside. Some private tours guide you through the interiors; others wait outside or drive between viewpoints. The difference is rarely in the title.
- Do Belém on a separate outing, or book a vehicle. No old-centre walking tour here reaches Belém, and Jerónimos is closed on Mondays.
- Match specialist tours to opening days. The Jewish heritage route needs the Carmo Museum (closed Sundays) and the Money Museum (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), and São Roque closes on Mondays and Sunday mornings.
- Wear shoes with grip. Alfama's cobbles and stairs are polished smooth and slippery when wet. A van tour is the better choice if anyone in your group struggles with steep ground.
- Use a van tour on arrival day. The Essência da Latitude tours collect from the airport or cruise terminal and carry up to four medium suitcases, so a first afternoon in Lisbon need not be wasted.
- Book a morning start in summer. The walking routes climb steadily with little shade in Alfama, and most operators offer departures from 08:00 or 09:00.
- Book your private guide early in the trip. Guests repeatedly say the lifts, shortcuts and restaurant tips they picked up were most useful for the days that followed.
- Ask whether timed tickets are booked for you. If your tour includes Jerónimos or Belém Tower, confirm who is reserving the entry slot; one full-day group could not get in because nobody had.
- Have a fallback for day one. A private tour depends on a single guide, and the rare failures in these reviews are a guide falling sick or a vehicle breaking down with no replacement. Confirm by WhatsApp the evening before, as the better operators do unprompted.
- Visiting in November? Our Lisbon in November guide covers the wettest month on average, when a private guide who can switch between indoor and outdoor stops is most useful.
- Look at recent reviews, not just the total. A tour with thousands of reviews but few in the past year tells you less about next week than one reviewed every few days.
How We Selected These Tours
The Vacation in Portugal team compared private guided tours of Lisbon on the factors that actually separate them: price at different group sizes, format, whether the guide goes inside the monuments, what entry is included, and where the tour starts. Every tour here is an active private listing in Lisbon, checked against its live schedule on 30 September 2026. We excluded tours without a review in the past six months, and ranked by the share of low ratings as well as the average. The 11 cover private walks through the old centre, half and full days by van with pickup, and specialist tours on Jewish Lisbon, African Lisbon and Belém.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a private tour guide in Lisbon?+
From €70 per person for two people on a three-hour private walking tour, which is €140 in total. Prices fall as the group grows: the same walk is €35 each for eight, and one private walk drops to €22 each for seven to fourteen. Half-day tours by van run €122.50 to €155 each for two, and full days with a guide inside the monuments €105 to €166 each for two. Entry fees are usually extra.
Is a private tour guide in Lisbon worth it?+
For groups of four or more it often is, because the per-person price of a private tour falls steeply at that size (to €50 each for four on the top-ranked walk), and you set the pace and the route. For a solo traveller the premium is large, with private walks at €145 to €162 for one person, and a group or free walking tour is the better value.
Do private guides in Lisbon take you inside the monuments?+
Only some of them. Kitzel Tours and Selection Tours include guided visits inside, and the Cooltour Belém tour includes Jerónimos entry and a guided visit. Others visit sights from outside, and one half-day private tour explicitly excludes a guide inside the monuments. Check this before comparing prices, and budget for entry fees on most tours.
Do private walking tours in Lisbon include Belém?+
No. The private walking tours of the old centre cover Baixa, Alfama, Chiado and Bairro Alto. Belém is about 6 km west along the river, so you need a vehicle tour that includes it, a full-day private tour, or the dedicated Belém walking tour that starts at Jerónimos Monastery. Jerónimos is closed on Mondays.
Can a private guide pick us up from our hotel in Lisbon?+
On the van and car tours, yes. Essência da Latitude collects from central hotels, the cruise terminal or the airport, Gold Compass, Kitzel Tours and Selection Tours pick up from hotels, and Inside Lisbon's walking tour offers hotel pickup within a set area. The other walking tours meet at a landmark such as the Rua Augusta arch or Rossio Square.
Are private tours in Lisbon good for families with children?+
Yes, and they suit families well on price, because the per-person figure falls with group size: €35 each for eight on the top-ranked walk. Several tours have child prices, such as €60 for ages 4 to 12 on the Kitzel Tours full day. For young children or anyone who struggles with steep cobbled streets, a van tour avoids most of the climbing in Alfama.
How long is a private tour of Lisbon?+
Most private tours of Lisbon run three hours on foot or four hours by van. Specialist walks run two to three hours, and the two full-day private tours run eight hours with hotel pickup at 08:30. Three hours covers the old centre; you need a full day or a separate tour to add Belém.
Are there private Jewish heritage tours in Lisbon?+
Yes. Essência da Latitude runs a four-hour private Jewish heritage tour by van, covering Alfama's former Jewish quarter, the Money Museum, Chiado, Rossio and the Carmo Archaeological Museum, with both museum entries and hotel pickup included. It does not visit a synagogue. Book it from Wednesday to Saturday, since Carmo is closed on Sundays and the Money Museum on Mondays and Tuesdays.
