Seeing Lisbon by boat costs €15 on a shared river cruise or €260 and up for a private boat with a skipper, and for a group of six a private yacht can cost barely more per head than a shared seat. We compare ten boats on price, dock, drinks and who they suit.
What You Should Know
- Lisbon boat tours run 45 minutes to 4 hours on the Tagus between Praça do Comércio and Belém Tower, on shared traditional boats, small shared sailing yachts, or a private boat with its own skipper.
- Boats leave daily between 10:00 and 19:30 from three docks: Belém, Santo Amaro under the 25 de Abril Bridge, and Sul e Sueste beside Praça do Comércio. None of the listings we checked includes hotel pickup.
- Shared trips cost €15 to €45 a head and private boats €260 to €670 per boat, so six people splitting a €295 private yacht pay about €49 each, barely more than a shared seat.
- No boat here is self-drive, and a sailing trip does not always sail: reviews of the shared daytime yachts include reports of motoring with the sail up. Private charters are where you can ask for real sailing, or the helm.
Lisbon Boat Tours
Lisbon boat tours cost anything from €15 for a 45-minute cruise on one of the city's registered traditional boats to €670 for a four-hour private catamaran with swimming off Oeiras. Almost all of them cover the same stretch of the Tagus: Praça do Comércio and Alfama, under the 25 de Abril Bridge, and down to Belém Tower. The view is much the same whichever you book, so the real differences are the boat, how many people you share it with, which dock it leaves from and what it costs per head.
This guide compares ten ways to see Lisbon by boat: shared sightseeing cruises, small-group sailing trips, and private boat hire with a skipper. If you specifically want a Lisbon river cruise rather than a sailing experience, the traditional boats leaving from Praça do Comércio are the ones built around sightseeing and commentary. Sunset sailings have their own page, our Lisbon sunset cruise comparison, and for music and an open bar see the Lisbon boat party guide. If you want dolphins rather than monuments, the dolphin tours from Lisbon sail different water entirely. For everything else to do on land, see our guide to the best things to do in Lisbon.

ℹ️ All ten listings were reviewed by our team on September 30, 2026. Prices are in euros and come from the operators' live price tables, which is why several private boats show a range: they price by group size, and some are cheaper from November to December or on winter sunset departures. Ratings and review counts come from the same listings. Prices and availability change, so confirm on your dates before booking.

Based on how these trips run in practice, a typical two-hour sail follows the same arc whichever dock it leaves from, though a boat starting in Belém sees the monuments first and downtown at the far end, while the Sul e Sueste cruises do the reverse. All of the shared trips meet you at the dock; none of them includes hotel pickup.
Our take (big boat or small boat): The clearest split in the ratings is between the traditional cruise boats and the small yachts. Nosso Tejo's guided cruise has 20 one- and two-star reviews out of 545, where Lisbon By Boat's shared sail has 3 out of 734. The complaints on the traditional boats are rarely about the river: they are about meeting points changed at short notice, late starts, and commentary that ranges from excellent to a guide who speaks only at the start and end. For €20 more, the shared yachts draw a small fraction of those complaints.
Our take (will it actually sail?): The most common expectation gap on the shared sailing trips is that the engine does the work: reviews for two of the shared-sailing operators include reports of motor-powered cruising with the sails raised but slack. Other reviews of the same boats describe catching real wind, so treat genuine sailing as a bonus on a shared trip, and ask for it when you book a private one.
At the time of our September 30, 2026 review, every sailing and private listing here was flagged for a refund if bad weather cancels the trip. The two Nosso Tejo cruises were not, so on those, a grey or windy day is not grounds for a refund once you are inside the 24-hour cancellation window.
Best Boat Tours in Lisbon
Six picks, one for each way people actually want to see Lisbon by boat. We ranked them on the thing that most changes the day on the water, which is how many people share the deck, not the price. All of them sail the Tagus between downtown and Belém unless noted.
Lisbon By Boat: Shared Luxury Sailing Yacht
A two-hour sail from Belém with a crew of two, a guide in four languages, two drinks and Portuguese cheese for €45. It is the most-reviewed daytime sail in the city and 704 of its 734 reviews are five stars. Groups of six or more can book the same boat privately. On quiet departures, several guests found themselves nearly alone on the boat.
Check availabilityDiscoverOasis: Best Views from a Sailboat
The cheapest sailing trip here at €33 for the day cruise, with wine, beer or water and snacks included, departing from Santo Amaro under the bridge. It crosses to the south bank for Cristo Rei. Children pay the full fare and each departure needs three guests to run.
Check availabilityNosso Tejo: Traditional Boat River Cruise
€15 for 45 minutes or €25 for the 1 hour 45 guided cruise on a 1947 boat registered with the National Navy Museum, leaving from beside Praça do Comércio. No drinks are included and the boat is open to the weather. Recent reviews also report meeting points moved at short notice, so check your email on the day. It is a poor fit before a fixed dinner or train: recent complaints are about late starts and trips running long, not the boat. Nothing else here gets you onto the river for less.
Check availabilityBloo Boat Charter: Private Luxury Boat
The boat is yours for two hours from Doca do Bom Sucesso, with fuel, fees, a welcome drink and Bluetooth speakers included, from €260 for up to two guests. It has 104 reviews averaging 5.0, the most of any private boat here, and it is listed as wheelchair accessible.
Check availabilitySailing with Sal: Private Sailing Tour
A private sailing yacht from Santo Amaro at €130 each for two on a daytime sail, with a dozen start times from 10:00 to 19:00. Winter sunset departures drop to €110 each for two. It is also listed as wheelchair accessible.
Check availabilityTaguscruises: 4 Hours Private Sailing to Oeiras
€450 for the whole boat for up to 12 people: four hours sailing past Belém Tower and the Bugio lighthouse into Oeiras Bay, with a stop to swim and sunbathe. The captain lets guests take the helm, which makes it the nearest thing to renting a sailing boat yourself, and several guests report dolphins on the way out.
Check availabilityBoat Hire in Lisbon: How Renting a Private Boat Works
If you searched to hire a boat or rent a sailing boat in Lisbon, the key point is that the bookable options are skippered charters. You hire the boat and its crew for two to four hours, and they sail it. None of the ten listings we compared is self-drive, including the operator trading as RENT A BOAT, whose private tour includes a skipper and a host. If you want your hands on the wheel, the Taguscruises half-day trip is the closest match: its listing says the captain gives guests the chance to take the helm and learn some sailing basics on the way to Oeiras Bay. It is not the only one: guests on several of the private boats, and even the traditional cruise boats, describe being handed the wheel for a stretch, so it is worth asking whichever boat you book.
Private boats in Lisbon are priced in three different ways, and it matters when you compare them:
- A flat price per boat: Taguscruises charges €450 for up to 12 people, Boat Tours in Lisbon €430 to €670 depending on length, and Lisbon By Boat €295 for up to six. The price is the same whether two or six of you board.
- Priced by group size: Bloo Boat Charter has separate prices for up to 2, up to 10 and up to 12 guests (€295, €320 and €380 in autumn, less from November), and Lisbon By Boat steps up to €350, €390 and €490 as the group passes 6, 10 and 12.
- Shown per person: RENT A BOAT and Sailing with Sal display a per-person price that drops as you add people. At RENT A BOAT the total stays €450 for the boat at any size up to 12. At Sailing with Sal the daytime total rises gently, from €260 for one or two people to about €342 for six and €420 for ten.
For two people a private boat is a treat, not a saving: the cheapest works out at €130 each against €33 to €45 for a shared sail. From about six people it becomes competitive, and Lisbon By Boat's private yacht at €295 is about €49 each, only €4 more than a seat on its shared sail.
Where Lisbon Boat Tours Leave From
Lisbon's boats leave from three waterfront spots spread along the river between downtown and Belém. Choosing the dock nearest where you are staying saves a cross-town taxi. Confirm it on the day, since the guests who miss sailings mostly went to an outdated meeting point.
Doca de Belém and Doca do Bom Sucesso
Lisbon By Boat, RENT A BOAT and Boat Tours in Lisbon meet at the Belém marina beside the Monument to the Discoveries. Bloo Boat Charter and Taguscruises use the neighbouring Doca do Bom Sucesso. Belém Tower and the Discoveries Monument are the first sights you pass, and the half-day trips head west from here to Oeiras.
Doca de Santo Amaro
DiscoverOasis and Sailing with Sal both leave from Gate 1 at Santo Amaro, directly under the 25 de Abril Bridge, between Belém and the city centre.
Sul e Sueste Boat Station
Nosso Tejo's traditional boats leave from inside the Sul e Sueste boat station next to Praça do Comércio. It is the only departure point on this page in the Baixa, within walking distance of Alfama and Chiado.
How Much Do Boat Tours in Lisbon Cost?
A Lisbon boat tour costs €15 to €45 per person on a shared boat and €260 to €670 for a private boat with crew. The cheapest Lisbon river cruise is Nosso Tejo's 45-minute €15 option. Shared sailing yachts cost €33 to €45 with drinks included, private two-hour charters run €260 to €490 per boat, and half-day trips with swimming cost €450 to €670. What matters more than the headline price is what it buys: on the half-day catamaran, the advertised from-price is the two-hour option.
Traditional boat cruise
Nosso Tejo's 45-minute express or its 1 hour 45 guided cruise from Praça do Comércio. Live commentary, no drinks, the biggest boats and the most mixed ratings.
Shared sailing yacht
Two hours on a small sailing yacht with drinks included: DiscoverOasis from €33 for a day cruise, Lisbon By Boat at €45 with two drinks and cheese. The best value for most visitors.
Skippered private boat
Bloo Boat Charter, Lisbon By Boat, RENT A BOAT or Sailing with Sal. The boat is yours, so the per-head cost falls with every guest you add.
Private trip with a swim
Four hours out to Oeiras Bay with a stop to swim: Taguscruises at €450 for up to 12 (plus €50 at sunset), or the Boat Tours in Lisbon catamaran at €545 for three hours and €670 for four.
For travellers prioritising a small-group sailing experience, the €33 to €45 shared yachts are the clearest middle ground between the €15 traditional cruises and the €260-plus private charters. For a group of six, Lisbon By Boat's private yacht works out at about €49 each, only €4 more than a shared seat on the same sail.
Pairing a Lisbon Boat Trip with a Day in the City
Most of the boats leave from Belém or Santo Amaro, so a morning sail slots neatly into a Belém day: Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are on the same waterfront the boats set off from. Tram 15 runs along the river to Belém, covered in our Lisbon tram tour guide, and the riverside cycle path used by the pedal-bike Lisbon bike tours ends at the same monuments.
For the hilly old town the river cannot reach, a guided walking tour of central Lisbon fills the gap, and the Nosso Tejo boats leave from Praça do Comércio at the foot of it. If you want to be back on the water at golden hour, compare the Lisbon sunset cruises.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing across these reviews is that the complaints are about logistics, not the river: moved meeting points, late starts and missing commentary. They cluster on the bigger shared cruises, while the private boats that message guests directly are praised for exactly the opposite.
Tips for Your Lisbon Boat Tour
- Check the dock on your booking: Belém, Santo Amaro and Sul e Sueste are spread along the river, and going to the wrong one is an easy way to miss a two-hour sail. Doca de Belém and Doca do Bom Sucesso are neighbours, but they are separate marinas with separate gates.
- Children's fares vary a lot: Lisbon By Boat charges €25 for ages 3 to 12 and Nosso Tejo's guided cruise €12.50 for ages 6 to 12, but DiscoverOasis charges children the full fare. On private boats, children count toward the boat's capacity.
- Watch minimum numbers: DiscoverOasis needs three guests per departure to run, so check your confirmation if you book a quiet weekday slot.
- Sunset costs extra on private boats: Taguscruises adds €50 for a sunset departure, and Sailing with Sal's private sunset sail is €325 for one person in summer against €260 for a daytime sail. For shared sunset trips, see our sunset cruise comparison.
- Order food ahead: Bloo Boat Charter takes catering orders 48 hours ahead, Taguscruises lunch up to 24 hours ahead, and RENT A BOAT tapas on request. Most private boats include a drink but not a meal. The main tradeoff on the half-day charters is that food costs extra, but the barbecue grilled on board and the catering platters are among the most praised parts of those trips.
- Wheelchair users have three private options: Bloo Boat Charter, Sailing with Sal and the Boat Tours in Lisbon catamaran are listed as wheelchair accessible. The other listings here do not say so.
- Check your email on the morning of the trip: Meeting points and start times do change, and the guests caught out are the ones who went to the dock in the original booking. Confirm the location a few hours before you leave.
- Bring a layer, even in summer: Morning and evening trips are noticeably cooler on the water, and on an open boat there is nowhere to shelter from rain. Most crews carry blankets, but a jacket is better.
- Consider four hours over two: The most common regret on the two-hour private sails is not booking longer. The half-day trips add a swim off Oeiras, and several guests on them report dolphins, though no one can promise them.
- Visiting in May? Our Lisbon in May guide covers the warm, mostly dry weather that suits a day on the Tagus, and the sea, still around 17°C, if your trip includes a swim stop.
- Cancel more than 24 hours out: The listings we checked on September 30, 2026 all showed a full refund for cancellations at least 24 hours before departure, and none after that.
How We Selected These Tours
The Vacation in Portugal team compared Lisbon boat trips on the things that change the day on the water: boat size and how many people share it, which dock it leaves from, what is poured, and the real per-head price once private boat pricing is worked through. Every listing is active and verified, with at least 30 reviews. We left out sunset-only sailings and party boats, which have their own guides, and hop-on hop-off river passes rated below 4. The ten picks cover budget river cruises, shared sailing yachts, two-hour private charters and half-day trips with swimming.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a boat tour in Lisbon?+
€15 to €45 per person on a shared boat. Nosso Tejo's 45-minute express cruise on a traditional boat is the cheapest at €15, its 1 hour 45 guided cruise is €25, and a two-hour shared sail on a small yacht costs €33 to €45 with drinks included. A private boat with crew costs €260 to €490 for two hours and up to €670 for a half day.
What is the best boat tour in Lisbon?+
For most visitors, Lisbon By Boat's two-hour shared sail from Belém at €45. It is the most-reviewed daytime sail in the city at 4.9 from 734 reviews, 704 of them five stars, and includes a crew of two, a guide and two drinks with Portuguese cheese. On a tighter budget, DiscoverOasis sails the same route from €33.
Can you rent a boat in Lisbon without a licence?+
Not among the bookable Lisbon tours we compared: all ten are skippered, including the operator called RENT A BOAT, so a crew sails the boat for you. The closest thing to sailing it yourself is the Taguscruises four-hour private trip to Oeiras Bay, where the captain lets guests take the helm and learn some sailing basics. It costs €450 for the boat for up to 12 people.
How much does it cost to hire a private boat in Lisbon?+
From €260 to €490 for two hours, depending on the boat and group size, and €450 to €670 for a half day. Bloo Boat Charter starts at €260 for up to two people off-season, Lisbon By Boat's private yacht is €295 for up to six, and RENT A BOAT charges €450 for up to 12. Split six ways, a private boat can cost under €50 each.
Where do boat tours leave from in Lisbon?+
From three places. Most sailing boats leave from Belém, at Doca de Belém by the Monument to the Discoveries or the neighbouring Doca do Bom Sucesso. Others go from Doca de Santo Amaro, under the 25 de Abril Bridge, and Nosso Tejo's traditional boats leave from the Sul e Sueste boat station next to Praça do Comércio. Always check the dock on your booking.
Are Lisbon boat tours suitable for children?+
Yes, every boat on this page takes all ages, but fares differ. Lisbon By Boat charges €25 for children aged 3 to 12 with under-3s free, Nosso Tejo's guided cruise €12.50 for ages 6 to 12 with younger children free on a lap, and DiscoverOasis charges children the full fare. On private boats, children count toward the maximum number of guests.
Can you swim on a boat trip from Lisbon?+
Yes, but only on the longer private trips. The Taguscruises four-hour sail and the Boat Tours in Lisbon catamaran (its three and four-hour options) head west to Oeiras Bay and stop so you can swim. The standard two-hour city sails stay on the river between downtown and Belém, with no swim stop. Guests on the half-day trips regularly report seeing dolphins on the way out, but it is a bonus rather than part of the trip.
What happens if a Lisbon boat tour is cancelled for bad weather?+
At the time of our September 30, 2026 review, every sailing and private listing here was flagged for a refund if bad weather cancels the trip. Nosso Tejo's two cruises were not, so on those the standard rule applies: a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, and nothing after that. The same 24-hour rule applied to every listing we checked.
