May is Lisbon at its most reliably pleasant: warm, sunny days, long evenings and much less rain than April. It is also the month prices pass €200 a night for a central four-star room. Here is what to expect, and the dates that matter.

What You Should Know

  • May is one of Lisbon's most comfortable months: highs around 23°C, lows around 14°C, rain on about 6 days and roughly 297 hours of sunshine, the biggest jump in sunshine of the spring.
  • It is also when prices step up. Our sample of central four-star hotels showed weeknight medians of about €197 to €205 and Saturday medians of €210 to €216, roughly €30 a night more than April.
  • Three dates shape the month: Fátima's pilgrimage on 13 May, the Corpus Christi holiday on Thursday 27 May, and the Lisbon Book Fair from 26 May to 13 June at Parque Eduardo VII.
  • The sea averages about 17°C, warmer than winter but still cold for most swimmers. May is a superb walking and day-trip month and an early, quiet beach month.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Lisbon?

⭐ Best-value May window, based on our hotel sample: weeknights, particularly in the first half of the month. Weeknight medians ranged from about €197 to €205 and Saturdays from €210 to €216, with no single expensive week. This is a price observation, not a weather claim; late May is on average a little warmer and sunnier.

💰 May 2027 hotel rates in our sample (central Lisbon, 4-star):
Weeknights: median ~€197–205 (middle half roughly €156–250) · Saturdays: median ~€210–216 (middle half roughly €169–268)
From a sample of 80 to 135 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on ten May 2027 dates. Fewer hotels returned rates for 1 and 5 May. Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night (maximum seven nights) is added on top. Rates change daily, so check live prices for your dates.

May is the month we would point most people to if they ask when Lisbon is simply nicest. Highs reach about 23°C, rain falls on only around 6 days, sunshine jumps to about 297 hours, and sunset is after 20:30 for most of the month. The hills, the viewpoints and Sintra's gardens are all at their most enjoyable, and the heat of July and August has not arrived.

The honest tradeoff is price and crowds. In our sample, central rooms passed €200 a night for the first time this year, and the city is visibly busier than in spring. We would book May for walking, day trips and long evenings, and look at February or early March instead if cost matters more than warmth.

Temperature

IPMA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals put the May average high at about 23°C and the low at about 14°C, more than two degrees warmer than April. Afternoons are warm enough for short sleeves; evenings by the river can still call for a light layer.

Rain Pattern

May averages about 58 mm of rain across roughly 6 days, about two fewer rainy days than April. Showers still pass through, especially early in the month, but long wet spells are uncommon.

Daylight and Outdoor Conditions

Sunrise moves from about 06:40 on 1 May to about 06:14 on 31 May, and sunset from about 20:27 to about 20:53. With around 297 hours of sunshine, May has the biggest month-on-month jump in sunshine of the spring, and evenings outdoors become the norm rather than the exception.

Lisbon Crowds and Prices in May

May prices in our sample were high but steady. There was no single expensive week; the main difference was weeknights against Saturdays.

1 to 9 May: Labour Day and IndieLisboa

Labour Day, 1 May, is a public holiday and falls on a Saturday in 2027. Our sample's median that night was about €210, and the Wednesday after was the lowest of the month at about €197, though fewer hotels returned rates for both dates. IndieLisboa's film festival runs until 9 May.

10 to 25 May: mid-season

Weeknight medians held at about €203 to €204 and Saturdays at €212 to €216. Crowds build steadily, particularly at Sintra, Belém and on Tram 28. The 13 May pilgrimage at Fátima affects day trips north rather than Lisbon itself.

26 to 31 May: Corpus Christi and the Book Fair

Corpus Christi on Thursday 27 May is a public holiday, and the Friday is a popular bridge day for a four-day weekend. Even so, our sample's median that Thursday, about €204, was in line with the rest of the month, and Saturday 29 May was about €216, the same as other May Saturdays. Most people do not realise how flat May pricing is: once you are in May, the saving comes from weeknights, not from the choice of week. Remember the tourist tax of €4 per person per night on top of the room rate.

The Book Fair, Fátima on 13 May and the Start of Beach Season

Lisbon Book Fair: 26 May to 13 June

The Feira do Livro de Lisboa returns to Parque Eduardo VII from 26 May to 13 June 2027, organised by APEL, the Portuguese publishers' and booksellers' association. It fills the park at the top of Avenida da Liberdade with publishers' stalls and author events, and it is free to wander. It is mostly in Portuguese, but the setting and the view down to the river make it worth an hour even if you do not read the language.

Fátima on 13 May

The anniversaries of the Fátima apparitions on the 13th of each month from May to October draw pilgrims, and 13 May is one of the largest gatherings of the year. If you are booking a day trip that includes Fátima, such as the Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos tours, either choose 13 May deliberately to see the pilgrimage or avoid it if you dislike crowds. Our day trips from Lisbon guide covers the Fátima tours.

The start of beach season

In 2026, the lifeguarded bathing season at the Cascais beaches began on 1 May and ran to 30 September; the 2027 dates are set each spring, so check before you go. The sea averages about 17°C in May, so the beaches at Cascais, Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica are pleasant for sun and sand, with swimming for the hardy. Our Lisbon surf lessons guide covers the beaches and the gentler late-spring swell.

What May is uniquely good for

May combines the warmth and long evenings of summer with spring's lower humidity and lighter crowds. It is arguably the best month of the year for anything you do on foot in Lisbon, and for Sintra's gardens, while the Book Fair at the end of the month adds a distinctly local evening out.

In our view, May suits first-time visitors who want reliably good weather and can accept higher prices. If it is your first time, our best things to do in Lisbon guide is the place to start, and our Sintra day tours guide explains the timed entry that matters more as the season gets busier.

What May Isn't Good For

May has few downsides, and they are mostly about cost and crowds.

A budget trip

Central four-star medians in our sample passed €200 a night, roughly €30 above April and about 70% above mid-January. If price matters more than warmth, our Lisbon in February guide covers the same city at low-season rates.

Avoiding crowds

Sintra, Belém, Tram 28 and the main viewpoints are noticeably busier than in spring. Start early, book timed tickets, and keep the busiest sights for weekdays.

Warm-water swimming

The sea averages about 17°C in May. The beaches are lovely, but most swimmers will find the water cold until later in the summer.

More May-Friendly Activities

  • The Book Fair: from 26 May, publishers' stalls fill Parque Eduardo VII, with views down Avenida da Liberdade to the river.
  • IndieLisboa: the international film festival runs until 9 May.
  • The Oceanário and Parque das Nações: the riverside park is at its best on a warm May afternoon, with the aquarium for the middle of the day.
  • A beach afternoon by train: the suburban line from Cais do Sodré follows the coast to Carcavelos and Cascais.

Our Take

Based on the rates we sampled, May is the month Lisbon's pricing changes gear: central weeknight medians of about €197 to €205 against roughly €115 in February. The weather difference is real, but if you are flexible, the same trip in early March costs about a third less for conditions that are good, if not as reliably sunny.

Tips for Visiting Lisbon in May

  • Favour weeknights: Saturday medians in our sample ran about €10 to €15 above weeknights all month.
  • Book Sintra's timed tickets early: May is one of Sintra's busiest months before summer, and the palaces use timed entry.
  • Choose your Fátima date deliberately: 13 May is one of the year's largest pilgrimages; go for it or avoid it.
  • Check opening hours on 1 May and 27 May: Labour Day and Corpus Christi are public holidays.
  • Add the Book Fair at the end of the month: it runs from 26 May at Parque Eduardo VII and is free to wander.
  • Carry sun cream and water: May sunshine is strong on the hills even when the air feels mild.
  • Plan Belém for a day other than Monday: Jerónimos Monastery is closed on Mondays.
  • Budget for the tourist tax: Lisbon adds €4 per person per night, up to seven nights, on top of the room rate.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Lisbon in April guide covers the month before, with slightly lower rates and Freedom Day, and our Lisbon in June guide covers the month after, with Santo António on 12 and 13 June and the start of beach weather.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are climate normals rather than a forecast: average high and low, rainfall and days with rain for May in Lisbon, taken from IPMA, Portugal's national weather service, for the 1991 to 2020 period. Sunshine hours are station averages for 1990 to 2019 from the German Weather Service (DWD). Sea temperatures are long-term averages from seatemperature.org. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Lisbon for May 2027. Hotel prices come from our own sample, not a market average: rates for 80 to 135 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on ten May 2027 dates covering weekdays, Saturdays and the two public holidays. Fewer hotels returned rates for 1 and 5 May, which makes those medians less certain. Rates move daily and differ by property and lead time, so check live prices for your dates. The Book Fair dates were announced by the organisers, APEL, and reported in July 2026. Public holidays follow the 2027 Portuguese calendar. The 2026 Cascais bathing season dates come from the Cascais municipality; 2027 dates had not been set when we checked. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, departure times and May schedules were read from the operator listings on 1 October 2026; one sailing listing had not yet published May times, and all may change. The favourable, mixed and challenging assessments are our own editorial judgement of one question only: how much do May conditions help or hinder each part of a trip? They weigh rain, temperature, daylight, sea conditions, crowds and seasonal events. They are not quality ratings for the operators and are not derived from reviews.
