February is still Lisbon's low season, a little warmer, sunnier and drier than January, with no New Year price spike. Carnival falls on 9 February in 2027, and the Nazaré big-wave season is still running.

What You Should Know

  • February is still Lisbon's low season: highs around 16°C, lows around 9°C, and rain on roughly 8 days. It is slightly warmer, sunnier and drier than January, but still a city month rather than a beach month.
  • There is no single price spike. Our sample of central four-star hotels showed weekday medians of about €114 to €116 and Saturday medians of €125 to €130, with the Carnival and Valentine's weekends the dearest.
  • Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027. The biggest celebration near Lisbon is in Torres Vedras, about 50 km north, whose 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked on 1 October 2026.
  • February storms are a real if occasional risk: the 2026 Torres Vedras carnival was cancelled after severe storms and moved to the spring. Book flexible rates for anything weather-dependent.

⭐ Best-value February window, based on our hotel sample: weeknights from 15 to 26 February, or 1 to 4 February. These fall outside the Carnival and Valentine's weekends, when Saturday rates in our sample were highest. The weather is not better in these weeks: climate normals are broadly similar across February, so the difference is price and demand.

CouplesFavourable: fado evenings and low rates; Valentine's Saturday is the dearest night

ℹ️ These are our editorial assessments of how February conditions affect each part of a trip, not review scores. Weather figures are climate normals from IPMA, Portugal's weather service, for 1991 to 2020.

💰 February 2027 hotel rates in our sample (central Lisbon, 4-star):
Weeknights: median ~€114–122 (middle half roughly €90–149) · Saturdays: median ~€125–130 (middle half roughly €100–171)
From a sample of 141 to 149 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on seven February 2027 dates. Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night (maximum seven nights) is added on top. Rates change daily, so check live prices for your dates.

February is January with slightly better odds. The city is just as quiet, rates in our sample were similar to mid-January, and the weather edges in the right direction: about a degree warmer, roughly 26 mm less rain on average, and around 16 more hours of sunshine across the month. Daylight also stretches noticeably, with sunset moving from about 18:00 to nearly 18:30.

The honest tradeoff is the same as January's: rain and the odd Atlantic storm, not cold. We would book February for food, culture and day trips, with Carnival as a bonus if your dates fall around the 9th, and steer anyone who wants beaches toward June to September instead.

Temperature

IPMA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Lisbon put the February average high at about 16°C and the average low at about 9°C, roughly a degree warmer than January by day and about half a degree warmer at night. Sunny afternoons in a sheltered spot can feel properly spring-like.

Rain Pattern

February averages about 78 mm of rain across roughly 8 days, less than January's 104 mm. Like the rest of the winter, rain tends to come with Atlantic fronts: a wet spell of a day or two, then clearer weather. Occasionally a deep storm brings strong wind and heavy rain for several days, as it did in February 2026, which is why flexible plans and refundable bookings matter more in winter than in summer.

Daylight and Outdoor Conditions

Sunrise moves from about 07:43 on 1 February to 07:11 on 28 February, and sunset from about 17:58 to 18:28. That adds roughly an hour of daylight across the month, and February averages about 175 hours of sunshine, around 16 more than January. Late-afternoon viewpoints are now a 18:00 plan rather than a 17:30 one.

Lisbon Crowds and Prices in February

Unlike January, February has no expensive holiday at the start. Prices in our sample were flat across the month, with a modest premium on Saturdays and two weekends a little busier than the rest.

1 to 4 February: quiet low season

The first days of the month carry on from late January. Our sample's Wednesday median was about €114, the lowest of the February dates we checked.

5 to 14 February: Carnival and Valentine's

Carnival weekend (6 and 7 February) and Valentine's weekend (13 and 14 February) were the two dearest nights in our sample, with Saturday medians of about €128 and €130. Carnival Tuesday, 9 February, is not one of Portugal's fixed public holidays, so opening hours vary; check museums and restaurants for that day.

15 to 28 February: back to quiet

The second half of the month returns to low-season rates, with a Wednesday median of about €116 and a Saturday median of about €125 in our sample. Most people do not realise how small the weekend premium is in February: about €10 to €15 a night, so if your dates are fixed, the weekend is not worth rearranging a trip around. Remember the tourist tax of €4 per person per night on top of the room rate.

Carnival and Nazaré: February's Seasonal Draws

Carnival on 9 February 2027

Carnival in Portugal falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which in 2027 is 9 February. The best-known celebration near Lisbon is in Torres Vedras, about 50 km north, which bills itself as the most Portuguese carnival in Portugal, with satirical floats, costumes and street parties over several days around the Tuesday. The 2027 edition's theme is "Entre o Sonho e a Magia", but the official dates had not been announced when we checked on 1 October 2026, so confirm them on the organisers' site before you plan around them.

It is also the clearest example of February's weather risk. The 2026 edition, due to run from 12 to 18 February, was cancelled after severe storms and moved to 30 April to 3 May. Our take: Carnival is a good reason to choose early February, not a reason to book a non-refundable trip around a single day.

Nazaré is still in season

February sits inside the Nazaré big-wave season, which runs roughly from October to March. For 2025/26 the World Surf League's competition window ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 March 2026, and the 2026/27 window had not been officially announced when we checked; if it follows the same pattern, February 2027 falls inside it. The giant swells arrive with only a few days' notice, so keep a flexible day. Our Lisbon in January guide covers the big-wave day trip in more detail, and our day trips from Lisbon guide compares the Nazaré tours.

What February is uniquely good for

February adds Carnival to the winter advantages January already has. Torres Vedras is the big event within reach of Lisbon, Nazaré is still in its big-wave season, and the sights that queue in summer, Sintra's palaces and Belém among them, are calm. Longer afternoons also make a full day of sightseeing easier than in January.

Everything else is weatherproof rather than exceptional. We like February for couples in particular: low rates, fado evenings and quiet streets, as long as you book Valentine's Saturday early. If it is your first time, our best things to do in Lisbon guide is the place to start, and our guide to Lisbon for couples covers the evenings.

What February Isn't Good For

February's downsides are practical rather than serious, but three things work noticeably less well this month.

Plans that depend on a single dry day

Rain falls on about 8 days, and the occasional deep storm can last several days, as the cancelled 2026 Torres Vedras carnival showed. Anything weather-dependent, from a sailing trip to a Carnival day, is best booked on a refundable rate with a spare day behind it.

Wet cobbles and steep streets

Lisbon's calçada pavements are polished limestone and turn slippery in the rain, especially on the steep streets of Alfama, Chiado and Bairro Alto. Shoes with grip matter more than a heavy coat; our is Lisbon safe guide covers the walking and transport advice.

Beaches and beginner surfing

The Atlantic averages about 15.2°C in February, and there is no lifeguard season. Surfing runs with wetsuits, but winter swells suit improvers more than first-timers; our Lisbon surf lessons guide covers which beaches suit which level. Guests on winter tours also describe Cascais as cold and windy, so Sintra is usually the better day trip.

More February-Friendly Activities

  • Carnival in Lisbon itself: expect children in costume and smaller local celebrations around Carnival Tuesday, a lighter alternative to the Torres Vedras crowds.
  • Indoor museums for wet days: the Oceanário, the National Tile Museum and the Gulbenkian Museum are the classic rainy-day plans.
  • LX Factory: bookshops, cafés and design stores in a former industrial complex in Alcântara, mostly under cover.
  • A viewpoint at sunset: with sunset moving from 18:00 to nearly 18:30, the late afternoon at Senhora do Monte or São Pedro de Alcântara catches the low winter light.

Our Take

Based on the rates we sampled, February's prices are set by the day of the week more than the date: Saturdays ran about €10 to €15 above weeknights all month, while the Carnival and Valentine's weekends added only a few euros more. A Sunday-to-Thursday stay saves more than choosing one February week over another.

Tips for Visiting Lisbon in February

  • Favour weeknights: in our sample, Saturday medians were €125 to €130 against €114 to €122 on weeknights.
  • Book Valentine's Saturday early: 13 February 2027 was the dearest night we sampled, and the small fado houses fill first.
  • Check Carnival details before you travel: confirm the Torres Vedras dates with the organisers, and check opening hours in Lisbon on Carnival Tuesday, 9 February.
  • Book refundable for anything weather-dependent: February storms can disrupt plans for several days, as the cancelled 2026 carnival showed.
  • Pack a waterproof and shoes with grip: rain falls on about 8 days, and wet calçada on Lisbon's hills is a real slip hazard.
  • Keep a flexible day for Nazaré: the big swells arrive with little notice, so watch the surf forecast.
  • Plan Belém for a day other than Monday: Jerónimos Monastery is closed on Mondays.
  • Budget for the tourist tax: Lisbon adds €4 per person per night, up to seven nights, on top of the room rate.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Lisbon in January guide covers the month before, with the Nazaré big-wave day in more detail and a sharper New Year price peak, and our Lisbon in March guide covers the month after, when spring arrives and Easter falls on 28 March.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are climate normals rather than a forecast: average high and low, rainfall and days with rain for February in Lisbon, taken from IPMA, Portugal's national weather service, for the 1991 to 2020 period. Sunshine hours are station averages for 1990 to 2019 from the German Weather Service (DWD). Sea temperatures are long-term averages from seatemperature.org, and sunrise and sunset times are for February 2027. Hotel prices come from our own sample, not a market average: rates for 141 to 149 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on seven February 2027 dates covering weekdays, Saturdays, Carnival and Valentine's. We report the median and the middle half of the range. Rates move daily and differ by property and lead time, so check live prices for your dates. Carnival details come from the Torres Vedras organisers and Portuguese press: the 2026 cancellation and rescheduling were reported in March 2026, and the 2027 theme in August 2026, when official dates had not yet been announced. The Nazaré competition window comes from the World Surf League's announcement for the 2025/26 season; the 2026/27 window had not been announced on 1 October 2026. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, departure times and February schedules were read from the operator listings on 1 October 2026 and may change. The favourable, mixed and challenging assessments are our own editorial judgement of one question only: how much do February conditions help or hinder each part of a trip? They weigh rain, temperature, daylight, sea conditions and whether a seasonal event is on. They are not quality ratings for the operators and are not derived from reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lisbon good in February?+

For city travel, yes. February is still Lisbon's low season, with daytime highs around 16°C, quiet streets and hotel rates in our sample of about €114 to €130 a night for a central four-star room. It is a good month for food, fado, museums, Carnival and day trips. It is not a beach month: rain falls on about 8 days and the sea averages about 15.2°C.

What is the weather like in Lisbon in February?+

Mild and changeable. IPMA's 1991 to 2020 normals put the average high at about 16°C (61°F) and the low at about 9°C (48°F), with roughly 78 mm of rain over about 8 days, around 175 hours of sunshine. Rain tends to come in spells with Atlantic fronts, with clear days in between, and occasional storms can last several days.

When is Carnival in Lisbon in 2027?+

Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027, the day before Ash Wednesday. The best-known celebration near Lisbon is in Torres Vedras, about 50 km north, which runs over several days around the Tuesday. Its 2027 dates had not been officially announced when we checked on 1 October 2026, so confirm them with the organisers. The 2026 edition was cancelled after severe storms and moved to the spring.

How much does it rain in Lisbon in February?+

About 78 mm across roughly 8 days, based on IPMA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals, a little less than January's 104 mm. Rain usually arrives with Atlantic fronts, so a wet day or two is often followed by drier weather, though occasional storms last longer. Pack a waterproof and shoes with grip for the slippery cobbles.

Is February expensive in Lisbon?+

No, it is low season. In our sample of central four-star hotels quoted in October 2026, weeknight medians were about €114 to €122 and Saturday medians about €125 to €130 for February 2027, with the Carnival and Valentine's weekends the dearest. Those are room-only rates for two before taxes, and Lisbon adds a tourist tax of €4 per person per night. Check live prices for your dates.

When is the best-value time to visit Lisbon in February?+

Based on our hotel sample, weeknights from 15 to 26 February or 1 to 4 February, outside the Carnival and Valentine's weekends. It is not a weather recommendation: climate normals are broadly similar across February. The difference between weeknights and Saturdays was only about €10 to €15 a night in our sample, so if your dates are fixed, the weekend is not worth rearranging a trip around.

What activities are best in Lisbon in February?+

The weatherproof ones and the seasonal ones. Fado, food and wine tours, cooking classes and museums are unaffected by rain, Sintra's palaces and Belém are quiet, Carnival falls on 9 February and Nazaré is still in its big-wave season. Beaches, bike tours and open-sided tuk-tuks are the activities February suits least.

Is Lisbon warmer in February than in January?+

Slightly. IPMA's normals put February's average high at about 16°C against roughly 15°C in January, with lows of about 9°C in both months. February is also a little drier, at about 78 mm of rain against 104 mm, and sunnier, with about 175 hours of sunshine against 159. Daylight grows by roughly an hour across the month, with sunset moving from about 18:00 to nearly 18:30.
