April brings Lisbon's first warm days, long light evenings and Freedom Day on 25 April, but also frequent showers and prices well above early spring. Here is what the month is really like, and when it costs least.
What You Should Know
- April is properly spring in Lisbon: highs around 20°C, lows around 12°C and about 248 hours of sunshine. Showers are frequent but short, falling on about 8 days with roughly 72 mm in total.
- Prices are well above early spring. Our sample of central four-star hotels showed weeknight medians of about €169 to €176 and Saturday medians of €179 to €188, roughly a quarter higher than early March weeknights.
- Freedom Day, 25 April, is a national holiday marking the 1974 Carnation Revolution, and it falls on a Sunday in 2027. The eve, Saturday 24 April, was the dearest night in our April sample.
- Evenings are long after the March clock change: sunset moves from about 19:58 to about 20:26. The sea is still around 16°C, so April is for walking and sightseeing rather than swimming.

This is a price observation, not a weather claim; climate normals change little across the month.

💰 April 2027 hotel rates in our sample (central Lisbon, 4-star):
Weeknights: median ~€169–176 (middle half roughly €137–225) · Saturdays: median ~€179–188 (middle half roughly €145–233)
From a sample of 84 to 140 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on seven April 2027 dates. Fewer hotels returned rates for some mid-April dates. Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night (maximum seven nights) is added on top. Rates change daily, so check live prices for your dates.
April is when Lisbon is at its most comfortable for walking. Afternoons reach about 20°C, sunshine averages around 248 hours, and after the March clock change it stays light until well after 20:00. The city's hills, viewpoints and gardens are at their easiest, and the crowds and heat of summer have not arrived.
The honest tradeoffs are showers and price. April has about as many rainy days as February, though the rain is lighter and the showers shorter, and rates in our sample were the highest of the year so far. We would book April for walking, Sintra and long evenings, pack a light waterproof, and choose weeknights to keep the cost down.

Temperature
IPMA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals put the April average high at about 20°C and the low at about 12°C, around a degree warmer than March. Afternoons in the sun feel warm; evenings by the river still need a jacket.
Rain Pattern
April averages about 72 mm of rain across roughly 8 days. That is more rain than March on average, and as many rainy days as February, but April rain usually comes as passing showers rather than long wet spells. What typically happens is a bright morning, a shower, and sunshine again within the hour, so a light waterproof matters more than an indoor plan.
Daylight and Outdoor Conditions
Sunrise moves from about 07:23 on 1 April to about 06:41 on 30 April, and sunset from about 19:58 to about 20:26. With around 248 hours of sunshine, April evenings are long enough for a full day of sightseeing followed by sunset at a miradouro.
Lisbon Crowds and Prices in April
With Easter falling in March in 2027, April has no Holy Week peak. Prices in our sample were steady across the month, with a Saturday premium and the 25 April weekend at the top.
1 to 18 April: spring
Weeknight medians in our sample were about €169 on 7 April and €175 on 14 April, and Saturdays about €187 on 10 April and €179 on 17 April. Crowds build steadily through the month, but most sights remain manageable outside weekends.
19 to 25 April: the Freedom Day weekend
The week from 19 April started with a weeknight median of about €169, and the eve of Freedom Day, Saturday 24 April, was the dearest night in our April sample at about €188. Freedom Day itself, Sunday 25 April, is a national holiday.
26 to 30 April: into May
Rates stayed high at the end of the month, with a median of about €176 on 28 April, as the season builds toward summer. Most people do not realise that, with Easter in March in 2027, April has no single expensive week: the difference is mainly weekday against Saturday, roughly €10 to €20 a night in our sample. Remember the tourist tax of €4 per person per night on top of the room rate.
Freedom Day, IndieLisboa and Sintra in Spring
25 de Abril: Freedom Day
Freedom Day, 25 April, marks the Carnation Revolution of 1974, which ended Portugal's dictatorship largely without bloodshed. It is a national holiday, and in Lisbon it is celebrated with a popular march down Avenida da Liberdade and red carnations everywhere. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday. For a visitor, it is one of the most meaningful days to be in the city; it also means some museums and shops change their hours, so check before you go.
IndieLisboa: from 29 April
The IndieLisboa international film festival runs from 29 April to 9 May 2027, so its opening days fall at the end of the month. It is an easy addition to a late-April trip if you want an evening indoors.
Sintra in spring
April is one of the best months for Sintra. The gardens of Pena, Monserrate and Quinta da Regaleira are green after the winter rain, the days are long, and the summer queues have not yet built. Our Sintra day tours guide explains the ticket tiers and timed entry, which matter more as the season gets busier. The Nazaré big-wave season, by contrast, is over by April; our Lisbon in January guide covers it.

What April is uniquely good for
April is the month for being outdoors in Lisbon without the summer heat. Walking tours, Sintra's gardens and sunset at the viewpoints are all at their best, and Freedom Day on the 25th is the year's most distinctive public celebration in the city. Long evenings make it easy to fit a full day of sightseeing and an evening out into the same day.
In our view, April suits first-time visitors who want warm walking weather and can accept showers and higher prices than early spring. If it is your first time, our best things to do in Lisbon guide is the place to start, and our Lisbon walking tour guide compares the walks this weather suits best.
What April Isn't Good For
April's downsides are mild, but three are worth planning around.
A budget trip
Rates in our sample were the highest of the year so far outside Easter, with weeknight medians around €169 to €176. If price is the priority, January to mid-March offers the same city for considerably less, as our Lisbon in March guide shows.
Guaranteed dry days
Showers fall on about 8 days. They are usually short, but a light waterproof and shoes with grip for wet calçada are still worth packing; our is Lisbon safe guide covers the walking advice.
Swimming
The sea averages around 16°C in April, and the beaches are better for a walk than a swim. Surfers wear full wetsuits; our Lisbon surf lessons guide covers the beaches and schools.
More April-Friendly Activities
- The 25 de Abril march: the Freedom Day procession down Avenida da Liberdade, with red carnations everywhere.
- IndieLisboa: the international film festival opens on 29 April, a good plan for a showery evening.
- The Gulbenkian gardens: green, quiet and at their best in spring, next to one of the city's major art museums.
- Sunset at the miradouros: with sunset after 20:00, Senhora do Monte and São Pedro de Alcântara become an after-dinner plan.

Our Take
Based on the rates we sampled, April 2027 is a weekday-versus-weekend month rather than a which-week month: with Easter in March, weeknight medians stayed around €169 to €176 all month while Saturdays ran €179 to €188, so a Sunday-to-Thursday stay is the simplest saving.
Tips for Visiting Lisbon in April
- Favour weeknights: in our sample, Saturdays cost about €10 to €20 more than weeknights.
- Book the 25 April weekend early: the eve of Freedom Day was the dearest night in our April sample.
- Check opening hours on 25 April: Freedom Day is a national holiday, and some museums and shops change their hours.
- Book Sintra's timed tickets ahead: spring is busier than winter, and the palaces use timed entry.
- Pack a light waterproof: showers fall on about 8 days, though they usually pass quickly.
- Plan sunset after dinner: sunset moves from about 19:58 to 20:26, so the viewpoints work late in the evening.
- Plan Belém for a day other than Monday: Jerónimos Monastery is closed on Mondays.
- Budget for the tourist tax: Lisbon adds €4 per person per night, up to seven nights, on top of the room rate.
- Visiting at a different time of year? Our Lisbon in March guide covers the month before, with lower early-March rates and Easter, and our Lisbon in May guide covers the month after, when the weather is at its most reliable and rates pass €200.
How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures are climate normals rather than a forecast: average high and low, rainfall and days with rain for April in Lisbon, taken from IPMA, Portugal's national weather service, for the 1991 to 2020 period. Sunshine hours are station averages for 1990 to 2019 from the German Weather Service (DWD). Sea temperatures are long-term averages from seatemperature.org. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Lisbon for April 2027. Hotel prices come from our own sample, not a market average: rates for 84 to 140 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 1 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on seven April 2027 dates covering weekdays, Saturdays and the Freedom Day weekend. Fewer hotels returned rates for some mid-April dates, which makes those medians less certain. Rates move daily and differ by property and lead time, so check live prices for your dates. The IndieLisboa dates come from the festival's own website. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, departure times and April schedules were read from the operator listings on 1 October 2026; one sailing listing had published times only to 24 April at that point, and all may change. The favourable, mixed and challenging assessments are our own editorial judgement of one question only: how much do April conditions help or hinder each part of a trip? They weigh rain, temperature, daylight, sea conditions and seasonal events. They are not quality ratings for the operators and are not derived from reviews.
