July is Lisbon's sunniest month: hot, dry and bright, with beach days, open-air festivals and NOS Alive in Algés from 8 to 10 July. It is busy and warm, but in our sample the second half of the month was cheaper than the first.
What You Should Know
- July is Lisbon's sunniest month: highs around 28°C, lows around 18°C, rain on less than one day on average and roughly 350 hours of sunshine. Hot spells happen; IPMA's July record for Lisbon is 40.6°C.
- Prices eased through the month in our sample. Central four-star medians were about €197 to €209 in early and mid July, and about €186 to €199 from 21 July, making late July the better-value half.
- NOS Alive, one of Portugal's biggest music festivals, returns to Passeio Marítimo de Algés from 8 to 10 July 2027, on the river west of Belém.
- The Atlantic is still cool, averaging about 18.9°C, though it is beach weather on land. Plan the hills for mornings and evenings, and the beach or the river for the middle of the day.

💰 July 2027 hotel rates in our sample (central Lisbon, 4-star):
1 to 18 July: weeknights ~€197–204, Saturdays ~€203–209 · 19 to 31 July: weeknights ~€186, Saturdays ~€193–199
From a sample of 121 to 129 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 2 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on ten July 2027 dates including the NOS Alive weekend. Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night (maximum seven nights) is added on top. Rates change daily, so check live prices for your dates.
July is Lisbon in full summer. Almost every day is dry and sunny, the evenings are warm and long, and the beaches along the Cascais line and at Costa da Caparica are at their busiest and best. Music festivals, outdoor terraces and river trips fill the calendar, and NOS Alive brings one of Europe's large summer festivals to the riverside at Algés.
The honest tradeoffs are heat, crowds and price. Afternoons on Lisbon's hills can be hard work, the main sights queue, and rates in our sample stayed around €200 for much of the month. We would book July for beaches, festivals and evenings out, aim for the second half if price matters, and plan sightseeing for the cooler ends of the day.

Daylight and Outdoor Conditions
Sunrise moves from about 06:14 to about 06:36 across the month, and sunset from about 21:05 to about 20:49. With around 350 hours of sunshine, July is the sunniest month of the year. What typically happens is that mornings are comfortable, the early afternoon is hot, and the evening is the best part of the day.
Lisbon Crowds and Prices in July
July prices in our sample did something unusual: they eased in the second half of the month, while crowds stayed at peak-summer levels.
1 to 7 July: early summer peak
Our sample's medians were about €203 on Saturday 3 July and €197 on Wednesday 7 July. The main sights, the beaches and Tram 28 are at their busiest.
8 to 18 July: NOS Alive and mid-July
NOS Alive runs from Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 July in Algés. Our sample's medians were about €204 on the Friday and €209 on the Saturday of festival weekend, only slightly above the rest of early July. Mid-July held at about €199 on weeknights and €208 on Saturday 17 July.
19 to 31 July: the late-July dip
Weeknight medians fell to about €186 on 21 and 28 July, and Saturdays to about €193 to €199. Most people do not realise that late July can be cheaper than early July; in our sample the second half of the month saved around €10 to €15 a night for the same weather. Remember the tourist tax of €4 per person per night on top of the room rate.
NOS Alive and Peak Beach Season
NOS Alive: 8 to 10 July 2027
NOS Alive returns to Passeio Marítimo de Algés on 8, 9 and 10 July 2027, its 19th edition. The site is on the river just west of Belém, reached by the riverside train line from Cais do Sodré. Tame Impala were the first act confirmed, for 10 July. If you are not going to the festival, it is still worth knowing: the riverside between Belém and Algés is busy over those three days.
Beach season at its height
July is peak beach season. The beaches along the Cascais line, from Carcavelos to Cascais, are reachable by the suburban train from Cais do Sodré, and the long Atlantic beaches of Costa da Caparica lie across the river to the south. In 2026, the lifeguarded season at Cascais ran from 1 May to 30 September and at Costa da Caparica from 1 June, so July falls well inside it. The sea averages about 18.9°C, which most swimmers find refreshing rather than warm.
Our take: go to the beach in the morning or late afternoon, when the sun is gentler and the trains are less crowded, and keep the hottest hours for a long lunch. Our Lisbon surf lessons guide covers the beaches and the gentler summer swell that suits beginners.

What July is uniquely good for
July is the month for beaches, festivals and long evenings. It is the sunniest month of the year, NOS Alive brings a major festival to the riverside, and the Atlantic beaches along the Cascais line and at Costa da Caparica are in full swing. The best July days in Lisbon combine a morning sight, a beach or river afternoon and a long evening at a terrace or miradouro.
In our view, July suits travellers who want sun and the beach as much as the city, and who are happy to sightsee early and late. If it is your first time, our best things to do in Lisbon guide is the place to start, and our Lisbon boat tours guide covers the cooler way to see the city from the river.
What July Isn't Good For
July's downsides are the predictable costs of peak summer.
Midday sightseeing on the hills
Alfama, Graça and Bairro Alto are steep, and the early afternoon is hot. Do the climbs in the morning or evening, and keep the middle of the day for the beach, the river, museums or a long lunch.
Avoiding crowds
The main sights, Sintra, Belém and Tram 28 are at their busiest. Book timed tickets, start early, and expect queues; our is Lisbon safe guide covers the pickpocket advice that matters most in crowded places.
Warm-water swimming
The sea averages about 18.9°C in July. It is refreshing on a hot day, but colder than many visitors expect from a southern European beach.
More July-Friendly Activities
- A beach day by train: the suburban line from Cais do Sodré follows the coast to Carcavelos and Cascais.
- The Oceanário in the heat of the day: one of the city's biggest indoor attractions, in Parque das Nações by the river.
- LX Factory in the evening: bookshops, cafés and bars in a former industrial complex in Alcântara.
- Sunset at the miradouros: with sunset around 21:00, Senhora do Monte and São Pedro de Alcântara are a late-evening plan.

Our Take
Based on the rates we sampled, the second half of July 2027 was the better buy: weeknight medians fell from about €197 to €199 earlier in the month to about €186 from 21 July, for the same hot, dry weather, so late July is the better choice if your dates are flexible.
Tips for Visiting Lisbon in July
- Choose late July if you can: weeknight medians in our sample were about €10 to €15 lower from 21 July.
- Sightsee early and late: do the hills before noon or after 17:00, and keep the hottest hours for the beach, the river or indoors.
- Book Sintra's timed tickets well ahead: July is one of the busiest months for the palaces.
- Plan around NOS Alive: 8 to 10 July brings big crowds to the Belém and Algés riverside.
- Carry water and sun cream: July sun on the hills is strong, and hot spells happen.
- Go to the beach early: morning trains along the coast are less crowded and the sun is gentler.
- Plan Belém for a day other than Monday: Jerónimos Monastery is closed on Mondays.
- Budget for the tourist tax: Lisbon adds €4 per person per night, up to seven nights, on top of the room rate.
- Visiting at a different time of year? Our Lisbon in June guide covers the month before, with Santo António and slightly cooler weather, and our Lisbon in August guide covers the month after, with the warmest sea of the year and the cheapest summer rates in our sample.
How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures are climate normals rather than a forecast: average high and low, rainfall and days with rain for July in Lisbon, taken from IPMA, Portugal's national weather service, for the 1991 to 2020 period. Sunshine hours are station averages for 1990 to 2019 from the German Weather Service (DWD), along with the station's July temperature record. Sea temperatures are long-term averages from seatemperature.org. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Lisbon for July 2027. Hotel prices come from our own sample, not a market average: rates for 121 to 129 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 2 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on ten July 2027 dates covering weekdays, Saturdays and the NOS Alive weekend. Rates move daily and differ by property and lead time, so check live prices for your dates. The NOS Alive dates and venue come from the organisers' announcement as reported by RTP. The 2026 bathing season dates come from the Cascais municipality and the Costa da Caparica rescue plan; 2027 dates had not been set when we checked. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, departure times and July schedules were read from the operator listings on 2 October 2026; one sailing listing had not yet published July times, and all may change. The favourable, mixed and challenging assessments are our own editorial judgement of one question only: how much do July conditions help or hinder each part of a trip? They weigh rain, temperature, daylight, sea conditions, crowds and seasonal events. They are not quality ratings for the operators and are not derived from reviews.
