September keeps summer's warmth and the warmest sea of the year, adds the grape harvest across the river on the Setúbal Peninsula, and takes the edge off the heat. It is also, in our sample, dearer than August. Here is what to expect.
What You Should Know
- September is still summer in Lisbon: highs around 27°C, lows around 18°C, and rain on only about 4 days, with roughly 260 hours of sunshine. Rain becomes more likely as the month goes on, ahead of a much wetter October.
- The sea is at its warmest of the year, averaging about 19.9°C, so September is as good as August for swimming at the Cascais and Caparica beaches, with the heat a little gentler.
- September is grape-harvest season on the Setúbal Peninsula across the river, where wineries open for harvest experiences; in 2026 the Palmela harvest festival ran from 3 to 8 September.
- Prices did not drop after August in our sample. Central four-star medians were about €202 to €222 a night, higher than any August date we sampled.

💰 September 2027 hotel rates in our sample (central Lisbon, 4-star):
Weeknights: median ~€202–222 (middle half roughly €153–338) · Saturdays: median ~€213–214 (middle half roughly €159–294)
From a sample of 81 to 103 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 2 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on nine September 2027 dates. Fewer hotels returned rates than for summer dates, so these medians are less certain. Lisbon's tourist tax of €4 per person per night (maximum seven nights) is added on top. Rates change daily, so check live prices for your dates.
September has a lot going for it in Lisbon. The weather is still summer, with highs around 27°C and rain on only a few days, but the fierce heat of July and August eases, and the sea is at its warmest of the year. Walking the hills becomes comfortable again, and the wine country across the river is in harvest.
The honest tradeoff is price. In our sample, September rates were higher than any August date we checked, so the month is not a bargain. We would book September for swimming, walking and wine, choose weeknights early in the month if price matters, and keep a light layer for the evenings, which draw in noticeably by the end of the month.

Rain Pattern
September averages about 39 mm of rain on roughly 4 days, much more than August's 5 mm but still mostly dry. Long settled, sunny spells are typical, and rain becomes more likely as the month goes on, ahead of October's 111 mm.

Lisbon Crowds and Prices in September
September prices in our sample were higher than August's, even as the beaches and sights became a little calmer after the summer holidays.

Saturday medians held at about €214, and the weeknight median rose to about €222 on 22 September, the dearest date we sampled, before easing to about €212 on 29 September. Fewer hotels returned rates for late September, which makes those figures less certain. Most people do not realise that September is not a shoulder-season bargain in Lisbon: in our sample, every September date cost more than every August date. Remember the tourist tax of €4 per person per night on top of the room rate.
The Grape Harvest and the Warmest Sea of the Year
Harvest season on the Setúbal Peninsula
Across the river from Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula is the nearest wine region to the city, and September is its harvest. The harvest there runs from late August into September, and wineries in the regional wine commission open up for harvest experiences through the month, from grape picking to tastings in the cellars, according to Publituris. In 2026, the Festa das Vindimas in Palmela ran from 3 to 8 September; the 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked. Our Lisbon wine tour guide compares the winery day trips to the region.
The warmest sea of the year
The Atlantic off Lisbon averages about 19.9°C in September, according to seatemperature.org, marginally warmer than August, which makes the first half of the month an excellent time to swim at Carcavelos, Cascais or Costa da Caparica. In 2026, the lifeguarded bathing season at Cascais and Costa da Caparica ran to 30 September; check the 2027 dates, and swim only where lifeguards are on duty. Our Lisbon surf lessons guide covers the beaches in more detail.

What September is uniquely good for
September combines the warmest sea of the year with weather gentle enough to walk the hills in comfort, and adds the harvest on the Setúbal Peninsula. It suits travellers who want a beach day, a long walk through Alfama and an afternoon in wine country in the same trip.
In our view, September is one of the strongest all-round months for a first visit if price is not the main concern. If it is your first time, our best things to do in Lisbon guide is the place to start, and our day trips from Lisbon guide covers the trips this weather suits.
What September Isn't Good For
September's downsides are few, but they are worth knowing before you book.
A budget trip
In our sample, September rates were higher than any August date we checked, at about €202 to €222 a night. If price matters more than warm water, our Lisbon in March guide covers the same city for considerably less.
Late-season swimming without lifeguards
The sea stays warm, but in 2026 the lifeguarded season ended on 30 September. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches, and check the 2027 dates if your trip runs late in the month.
Guaranteed dry weather at the end of the month
Rain is still infrequent, but it becomes more likely as the month goes on, and October averages almost three times as many rain days. Pack a light layer and a compact umbrella if your trip runs into the last week; our is Lisbon safe guide covers the walking advice for wet cobbles.
More September-Friendly Activities
- A harvest experience in Palmela or Azeitão: wineries on the Setúbal Peninsula open for grape picking and tastings through September.
- A beach day by train: the suburban line from Cais do Sodré follows the coast to Carcavelos and Cascais.
- LX Factory in the evening: bookshops, cafés and bars in a former industrial complex in Alcântara.
- Sunset at the miradouros: sunset moves from about 20:09 to 19:22, so the viewpoints shift from after dinner to before it.

Our Take
Based on the rates we sampled, September is an easy month to mis-budget in Lisbon: it can feel like the start of the shoulder season, but central four-star medians were about €202 to €222 against €175 to €197 in August, so the warm sea and gentler heat come at a premium rather than a discount.
Tips for Visiting Lisbon in September

How We Put This Guide Together
Temperature and rainfall figures are climate normals rather than a forecast: average high and low, rainfall and days with rain for September in Lisbon, taken from IPMA, Portugal's national weather service, for the 1991 to 2020 period, along with the station's September temperature record. Sunshine hours are station averages for 1990 to 2019 from the German Weather Service (DWD). Sea temperatures are long-term averages from seatemperature.org. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Lisbon for September 2027. Hotel prices come from our own sample, not a market average: rates for 81 to 103 four-star hotels within 2 km of Baixa, quoted on 2 October 2026 for one night for two adults, room only, before taxes, on nine September 2027 dates. We report the median and the middle half of the range. Fewer hotels returned rates than for the summer months, which makes these medians less certain. Rates move daily and differ by property and lead time, so check live prices for your dates. Harvest details come from Publituris's August 2026 report on the Setúbal Peninsula's harvest programme; 2027 dates had not been announced. The 2026 bathing season dates come from the published 2026 season announcements for Cascais and Costa da Caparica. Tour prices, ratings, review counts, departure times and September schedules were read from the operator listings on 2 October 2026; one sailing listing had not yet published September times, and all may change. The favourable, mixed and challenging assessments are our own editorial judgement of one question only: how much do September conditions help or hinder each part of a trip? They weigh rain, temperature, daylight, sea conditions, crowds and seasonal events. They are not quality ratings for the operators and are not derived from reviews.
